Trombones of Costa Rica is formed by Martín Bonilla, principal trombone in the National Symphony Orchestra and professor at the UCR, Dr. Luis Fred, Assistant Professor at the Central University of Florida; César Fumero, bass trombone of the National Symphony Orchestra and Leonel Rodríguez, professor at the UCR-Pacific Headquarters and director of the group Rumba Jam.

With our festival having been in existence for over a decade, this article provides us with an opportunity to present our pedagogical vision to InnovaTrombone subscribers. Broadly speaking, the festival is a space made up of individual classes, master classes, recitals, chamber music workshops and concerts. The participant’s exhibition to the guest artist and quartet has multiple lines.

  1. Individual classes

All festival participants have access to two individual classes. One with the guest artist and the other with a TCR member. Addressing individual concerns in our participants is vital and this format allows for correction of technical or conceptual issues.

Trombones of Costa Rica brings artists who are recognized performers but who also have talents as pedagogues. This makes individual classes a fantastic opportunity for musical and technical growth.

  1. Master Classes

During the Festival, master classes are given covering all types of repertoire; concerts, orchestral extracts or technical studies. The variety of levels that is observed offers the opportunity to students and teachers to observe new strategies for solving problems that occur in trombone pedagogy.

  1. Chamber Music.

Since Trombones of Costa Rica is a pioneering group in chamber music, it is natural that our festival has an important component which deals exhaustively with this fundamental aspect of our art. Playing chamber music involves the development of the musician to develop and be sensitive to demands of balance, color, articulation, among other aspects.

Trombone choirs are led by TCR members and classes are taught with the assistance of classmates.

  1. Concerts, Festival Venue, Information.

The venue for the activities will be the University of Costa Rica-Pacific Headquarters in the town of Puntarenas. Every night of the Festival there is a concert for the general public. In this year’s edition there are four concerts.

On Monday, May 13, at 7:00pm, Trombones of Costa Rica will perform at Casa de la Cultura.

On Tuesday, May 14, at 5:30pm, the University of Central Florida Trombone Choir will perform at the UCR Pacific Headquarters Multipurpose Hall.

On Wednesday, May 15, at 7:00pm, Toby Oft will present his recital at Hotel Puerto Azul.

Thursday, May 16 6:00 p.m. will be the closing concert of the participants in the Multipurpose Room of the UCR Pacific Headquarters.

On Thursday 16, there will be a Trombone Jam on Cocos Island, beginning at 8:30pm.
